just listened for the first time, awesome [2]. Also best thing I've ever listened, alongside with Lonesome Crowded West.

I feel like this is the only thing of BTS that i truly love, but it's enough. So, so enough.

"I remember talking to someone online who said this album was a glossy 'sell-out'. What an utter fud. They were also trying to turn me on to Bright Eyes. Fuck's sake." a glossy sell-out? nah. BTS' production values and playing style are about the same on this record as they ever were. i wouldn't call it a sell-out, but i think this record is the point where the band and their songwriting finally moved fully into "serious rock" territory and shed the last of their old, funny juxtaposition of twee-meets-big-loud-psych-rock which was what drew me in originally. i was willing to go as far as "perfect from now on"... but this record, "keep it like a secret" i found was just too earnest, too serious, and no longer quite the weird little band that i had once liked so much.

I bought this record on my 18th birthday, and was instantly blown away. Definitely one of the most critical albums in my life.

FACT: I bought this album after hearing a great song on KROQ - back in the day when listening to US radio online seamed like a massive novelty in 1999 Scotland - and I guessed, "I bet this is that band Built To Spill who are supposed to be amazing". I was right! That song was, of course, "You Were Right". Bought the album ASAP.
